Cici & Hyatt Brown Museum of Art

The Cici & Hyatt Brown Museum of Art is one of the most significant cultural construction projects in Volusia County's history — and one of Bomar Construction's most celebrated achievements. This AIA award-winning museum was built to house one of the largest collections of Florida art in existence, donated by prominent Daytona Beach philanthropists Cici and Hyatt Brown. Bomar served as the General Contractor, working alongside RLF Architects throughout the design and construction process. The project was delivered on time and under budget despite its exceptional complexity.

The Challenge

Museum construction is among the most demanding commercial project types. The Cici & Hyatt Brown Museum required exacting environmental controls for art preservation — precise temperature, humidity, and lighting systems — alongside the architectural and structural demands of a landmark public building. The project was fast-paced, highly complex, and carried significant community and philanthropic expectations. Any overrun in cost or schedule would have had public consequences for both the owner and the contractor.

Our Solution

Bomar's involvement began at pre-construction, where our team provided detailed cost estimating and value engineering alongside RLF Architects. This early collaboration allowed the project to be designed to budget from the outset, avoiding the costly redesign cycles that plague many complex institutional projects. During construction, Bomar's hands-on management style and daily site presence maintained schedule momentum and quality standards throughout. Specialty subcontractors for museum-grade environmental systems, security, and lighting were carefully pre-qualified and managed.

The Outcome

The Cici & Hyatt Brown Museum of Art was delivered on time and under budget — an exceptional outcome for a project of this complexity and public profile. The museum received an AIA award recognizing its architectural quality, and has become a beloved cultural institution in Daytona Beach. The project resulted in a 30-year professional relationship between the Brown family and Bomar Construction, with subsequent projects including the Riverfront Esplanade Park. It stands as the strongest testament to what Bomar's owner-focused approach can achieve.
